How Your Toyota Engine & Combustion System Works

You can be forgiven if you take for granted exactly what your engine does for you, after all there’s a lot of moving parts getting to work to get you where you want to be. From the timing belt to the crankshaft to the piston and more, your engine system involves a detailed process to power your Toyota. Let’s take a step-by-step look at how it works.

1. Fuel & air comes in through the intake valves to the cylinders
2. A spark ignites that fuel and air combination in a controlled explosion that triggers the pistons to move up and down
3. The crankshaft then goes to work by taking that up-and-down motion and translating it to a rotation, which then moves on to the transmission, allowing your vehicle to move forward.
4. Excess gasses from this are dispersed by the exhaust valves and leave through the exhaust system.

When Should You Have Your Engine Air Filter Inspected?

An important component of engine health and performance is regulated by the engine air filter. When an air filter gets clogged it will rob your engine of much needed air that it needs (as evidenced by the process above), which, in turn, cuts down on the fuel efficiency of your drive as well as increasing harmful emissions. Thus, it is recommended to have your engine air filter inspected every 8,000 km, and replaced if need be. Your engine is an important component in your vehicle, that should go without saying, so it’s important to inspect it regularly and treat it to regularly scheduled maintenance.
